What makes Panasonic’s Viera VT20 series the ultimate in 3D TV?

01 November 2010

So just how do Panasonic's new Viera VT20 series of Full HD televisions bring the world of 3D TV to life?

All screens in the series use Frame Sequential technology to create an immersive 3D effect. This means that the TV sends a Full HD image to each eye individually, ensuring that each eye receives the right image to create the 3D effect by using synchronised active-shutter glasses.

Creating 3D images in Full HD means that the television has to refresh twice as fast as a regular Full HD TV, as the screen needs to display a separate image for each eye in the time it takes an ordinary screen to display a single HD frame.

This represents quite a technical hurdle - and it's one that's overcome by Panasonic's High-Speed 3D Drive and pixel technology. The two technologies work together to reduce the time pixels are illuminated on the plasma display panel, and increases the intensity to produce bright, crisp 3D images.

Also crucial to making 3D images as convincing as possible is the reduction of so-called 'crosstalk'.

Crosstalk occurs when pixels, used to create the left eye image, remain illuminated for a short time after the right eye image has been displayed. This leads to a blurry double-image effect that is noticeable to the 3D viewer instead of a crisp, sharp single 3D image. Panasonic's Crosstalk Reduction technology uses specially developed phosphors to reduce the time taken for the alternating image to fade to one-third that of conventional plasma screens, practically eliminating it and ensuring the best 3D viewing experience.

In addition to the technology in the screen, the active shutter glasses used by Panasonic's 3D TV system also black out both eyes as they switch from one lens to the other, effectively preventing the view from each eye being 'contaminated' by visual information intended for the other eye.

An ultra-fast pixel response time of 0.001 milliseconds means your picture won't be affected by motion blur, no matter how frantic the action on screen – making the Panasonic Viera VT20 series the perfect screens to gather round for a blockbuster action movie or the latest Premiership match courtesy of Sky 3D.

But Panasonic's Viera VT20 series TVs don't just excel as 3D screens - they incorporate a number of technologies that put them at the front of the field for 2D, too. Infinite Black Pro technology produces an incredible contrast ratio of 5 million:1, meaning rich, dark blacks that not only help to enhance the clarity of 3D images, but make the most of conventional content.

And with the Viera VT20 series, you don't just get the highest visual quality. All screens in the series are THX-certified, which means you can look forward to cinema-quality performance, the way the director intended, in the comfort of your own living room.

If you want to experience the ultimate in big-screen 3D entertainment at home, look no further than the Viera VT20 series from Panasonic.
